Associated Risk Factors of Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis

چکیده
We suspect that a painful disease involving the equine incisors and canines called equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) does not have a single determinant but rather occurs as the result of the cumulative impact of several risk factors: trauma caused by excessive dentistry, periodontal disease, type of feed, genetics and hormonal conditions such as equine Cushing’s disease (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction; PPID) and equine metabolic syndrome, and the presence of laminitis. Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis.
A poorly described, painful disorder of incisor and canine teeth, variably causing periodontitis, with resorptive or proliferative changes of the calcified dental tissues, has recently been documented in aged horses. No plausible aetiopathogenesis for this syndrome has been recorded. Eighteen diseased teeth from eight horses were examined grossly and microscopically and showed the presence of o...

Dental disease and its prevention and treatment comprises approximately 10% of the general equine practitioner’s work. The most common disease affecting the equine hypsodont teeth is the development of dental overgrowths. Brachydont dentition (canines and wolf teeth) are less often diagnosed with dental disease. Gingivitis and periodontal disease as seen in many young horses can affect any toot...
متن کاملDental resorption in an old pony: Case report
A 22 year old pony with poor body condition and pain due to severe resorption of the mandibular incisors with only fragments of the teeth remaining is described. The most severely damaged teeth were extracted, and the pony did well for 17 months, but then continued resorption in the maxillary incisors, which was seen at first presentation, became a problem due to periodontitis and pain. Intra o...
متن کاملThree-dimensional anatomy of equine incisors: tooth length, enamel cover and age related changes
BACKGROUND Equine incisors are subjected to continuous occlusal wear causing multiple, age related changes of the extragingival crown. It is assumed that the occlusal wear is compensated by continued tooth elongation at the apical ends of the teeth. In this study, μCT-datasets offered the opportunity to analyze the three-dimensional appearance of the extra- and intraalveolar parts of the enamel...

Rostral mandibular and maxillary factures are the most common type of fractures sustained to the head of the horse. They are most often seen in younger animals with deciduous or mixed deciduous and permanent dentition. These injuries are frequently seen to arise from falls or kicks, biting behavior with tie-up chains, or involvement with window bars or mangers. Rare cases are iatrogenic from de...
